Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device |
|
Date action: |
19 January 1968 |
|
Theater: |
Republic of Vietnam |
|
Reason: |
For heroism in connection with
military operations against a hostile force. Sergeant McLaughlin
distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 19
January 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a
member of a six man Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol in the area of
Quang Nam Province. On that date, the team was taken under fire by a
large force of North Vietnamese Army Regulars. Immediately upon making
contact with the enemy force, Sergeant McLaughlin, with complete
disregard for his own safety, moved across a clearing in an attempt to
reach the radio and call in artillery fire on the hostile positions.
As he crossed the bullet-swept area, he was wounded in the chest by
enemy small arms fire. Displaying great courage and determination,
Sergeant McLaughlin continued across the clearing until being wounded
for the second time. Realizing that he could not reach the radio, he
stood up in the exposed position and delivered effective suppressive
fire on the insurgents' position until he fell mortally wounded.
Sergeant McLaughlin's gallant display of bravery served as an
inspiration to the rest of his team. Sergeant McLaughlin's intrepid
actions and avid devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest
traditons of the military service and reflected great credit upon
himself, the Americal Division and the United States Army. |
